We break away from God
in our own ways,
along our own lines,
the same cracks splintering again.
But remember when
your husband was gone
and your babies were crying
and you screamed?
Your light was shining then
just as it is now
only you couldn’t see it,
and it made no sound.
Remember when
there was nothing
but anger
and nothingness?
Your light was shining then
just as it is now
only you couldn’t feel it,
it was somehow unreachable.
Remember when
the dishwasher, laundry machine,
and oven broke during the same
week everyone was sick, and you cried?
Your light was shining then
just as it is now
only you couldn’t taste it,
and its aroma was undetectable.
We will mend, in time,
these breaks, the lines,
for your light, God’s light,
will shine through the cracks.

This is a wonderful poem. So heartfelt and honest. I love the repetition of “remember when” and the details of the struggles. I love how the cracks from our breaking away from God at the beginning of the piece ties in with the last stanza and the “God’s light,/ will shine through the cracks.” Beautiful truth and expression of it here! Sometimes these poems write themselves. Our talks from bible study revealed this interworking of breaking and God’s work of using our struggles to speak to us. You mentioned him coming in through the cracks of our humanness. Of God’s constancy, as a hound of heaven, being always Present. When we are weak, Christ’s strength is revealed. Who says this, St. Paul? Thank you for your inspiration. For never giving up on looking for meaning. I’m blessed to share the journey with you!
