A Prayer for Right-Seeing

There are times
it requires the entire will,
every muscle fiber, each heart-string,
to see those squashed banana pieces as jewels,
the bread crumbs as confetti,
the demands as opportunities for love.

There are times
I feel the heart reaching, insisting, pulling
on the harness of right-seeing, yoking
these phyical moments to the ever-lasting instant.

So when the dark douses my light
and plunging, sinking, drowning pride
brings its crooked despair,

breathe for me
and turn my eyes to the sky,
let the water recede
and the salt dry up the pity.

There are times
I feel the heart reaching, insisting, pulling
on the harness of right-seeing, yoking
these physical moments to the ever-lasting instant.

Remind me my image is yours.
I am made for the unconditionality of love,
the humility of Christ.

Oh the struggle!! This poem really captures the efforts of right-seeing. I love the ending that we are “made for the unconditionality of love, the humility of Christ.” That is so powerful. What truth to live with our bumbling human lives. I love the beginning and the effort of seeing the ‘squashed banana pieces as jewels/ the bread crumbs as confetti,/ the demands as opportunities to love.” That is lovely and says worlds about centering and i love the details. I feel the heart’s pulling on the yoke. The struggle to yoke the physical to the ever-lasting in that stanza is strong. I find the “breathe for me” and “remind me” work well to express the frustration and helplessness one feels in the struggle. I really enjoyed this poem. Wonderful piece Amy!!

I also love the repetition of “There are times” This works well in structuring the form to the content. Also I adore the” crooked despair”!!

I always feel like I am “efforting” to get myself to see with the correct (big) perspective, but it is really God doing that, isn’t it? My pride gets in the way of my humility. Constantly! Yes, there’s lots going on in this poem prayer. it could easily be more than one piece. I wanted to share the negatives we all experience but in light of the Light. It was going to be a poem, but once I slept on it I realized it was a prayer. As all of my poems should be! Also, I know there are times I am covered in despair and I truly can’t see anything at all except negativity. So in my lighter moments, my wake-up moments, I try to remember to pray for that “future help” when I will be too distracted to remember that God is always with me. Thanks for your constant friendship along the journey!
